WB: Approx. 70 kDa band observed in human placenta lysates (calculated MW of 68.1 kDa band according to NP_005814.2 and of 69.0 kDa band according to NP_037536.2). An additional band of unknown identity was also consistently observed at 150 kDa. This band was successfully blocked by incubation with the immunizing peptide.

Background
An antibody that reacts with ovarian cancers and mesotheliomas was used to isolate a cell surface antigen named mesothelin. Although the function of mesothelin is unknown, it may play a role in cellular adhesion and is present on mesothelium, mesotheliomas, and ovarian cancers. This gene encodes a preproprotein that is cleaved into two products, megakaryocyte potentiating factor and mesothelin. Alternative splicing results in multiple transcript variants.
